Messing Around with BandLab: My Music-Making Journey

Introduction

Hello, it has been a long time, my dear creative readers! I have made many posts that are sitting in my drafts… alas, I have had anxiety about posting them. But well, hey, I probably just should!? It is a lot like writing lyrics- I have this huge idea, and then, without setting a timeline for myself, I disappointingly discard it after not finishing the initial idea. I lose the steam for it and decide that perhaps I will ride the spark of another idea. Well, as a creative, discipline might be the hardest part for me! It is time that I at least somewhat catch you guys up on what I have been up to since November. Those posts sitting in my drafts WILL be posted soon, as a sort of backtrack!

Well… anyway…. Lately, Iโ€™ve been diving into BandLab, just messing around with sounds, loops, and ideas, seeing what sticks. Itโ€™s wild how a simple beat can spark something unexpected. There is something that is so fascinatingly enthralling about layering sounds and listening to the potential of a song slowly take shape. Of course, the only drawback for me is that itch of perfectionism that keeps me from releasing my art to you, creative minds!

The Spark of an Idea

Most of the time, I donโ€™t start with a clear vision. I shape everything creative from a mess of ideas, potentials, thoughts, and emotions. If my creative process was a physical representation, it would be grabbing clay, pencils, papers, stencils, scissors, anything that catches my fancy, and just throwing it all over a table. From there, it’s almost like a Rubik’s cube. Nothing makes sense… yet. I start turning, rotating, solving, and just messing around until something starts to take shape…. and from there, I continue shaping.

Likes and Dislikes

BandLab is pretty intuitive, which makes it easy to experiment. My main DAW that I prefer is FL Studio, but BandLab has been a fun tool to use on-the-go when I am out and about. I love to use it as a notepad of sorts, or for brainstorming.

Compared to FL Studio, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I could mess around with compression, limiters, and other VST type options with audio recording, synths, and loops. Therefore, using Band lab to jot down ideas, I then export these ideas (if I wish to go further) into FL Studio and continue from there. At least, that’s what I plan to do in the future! It has been a lot more convenient than using FL Studio mobile, which tends to become buggy and stop working. I’ve been surprised by how much the Band lab app can handle without bogging down!

Songs in Progress

Right now, I have a few songs in the works. Many of them are doodles, in song form. I love that! Can we come up with a word for a song doodle? One is about affirmations. One is about taking life day by day… and another is about the day not needing to be any more than decent. Really, these song doodles, musical doodles, moodles, are about staying in a mindset that keeps us in a happy and safe space every day.

Whatโ€™s Next?

I donโ€™t know if these songs will ever be finished in the traditional sense, but thatโ€™s the beauty of it. Every time I open BandLab, I end up recording a freestyle, meshing some loops together, compressing audio for funsies, or just scrapping a section entirely. For now, Iโ€™m just enjoying the process, letting myself create without pressure. Who knowsโ€”maybe one of these tracks will turn into something bigger.

If you use BandLab or make music, Iโ€™d love to hear how you approach it! Drop a comment and letโ€™s talk about making noise.
